What makes an object sentimental may not necessarily be about value, use, aesthetics or ownership. Through researching these objects and the stories they hold it is possible to have a discussion about how objects participate in the way we live out our lives: as enrichments to our interiors, as aids to remembering our personal histories, provocations for thinking, signals to who we are as people, and in essence, how they help us to locate ourselves within our environment.
In order to gain a better understanding of what these objects are, and why people feel a connection to them, I plan to investigate the qualities of these material objects and the stories they tell us- how they feel and look, and why they make us feel connected to ourselves and to our past. To study the symbiotic relationship we can have with materials, ourselves and the environment we keep them in.
This will inform an ongoing project to create a body of research with which to use in creating a piece that can capture the lasting impressions that these invaluable objects leave on us.
